Never Met a Mexican (Shortbread) I Didn't Like

Posted by Mar Manzanares-Brock on

I spent an incredible amount of time today looking up Mexican shortbread cookies. As a Mexican, I had no idea exactly what they were! I attribute that to the fact that my time in the United States has been limited and that my knowledge of Mexican things is very regional. So when I finally found the description and alternate names for this sweet delicious cookie, I let out a big sigh of relief. Surely I couldn't possibly be completely new to what appears to be a classic treat?!

Also known as hojarascas (or polvorones, like they were to me my entire childhood), Mexican shortbread cookies are delicious, crumbly, and coated in cinnamon sugar. Usually made with "manteca" or lard, you can also use shortening to make them. The key ingredient to a tasty hojarasca is the cinnamon tea, brewed specifically to hydrate the dough and infuse the cookie with delicious warm notes.

This cookie was a favorite of mine (and apparently, everyone else's too) during my childhood. So when I found out there was a Mexican Shortbread flavor in our Spring Collab with Sweet Heather Anne I let out a little squeal! A favorite cookie, but in Bon form?! I've truly never met a polvoron I didn't like; paired with delicious, silky white Bon Bon Bon chocolate and you've got a definite winner. Delicious Mexican shortbread straight from the Sweet Heather Anne kitchen, in a solid piece white chocolate Bon (the kind that makes non-lovers of white chocolate into yay-lovers!).

Make sure you pre-order your Spring Collection (for shipping or pick up!) so you can enjoy this flavor and 11 others!
